Second Look: Neighborhoods/Segregation/Pride. The construction of the dress features panels of black and white, with straight borders, representing Chicago's heavily segregated neighborhoods. Linking these neighborhoods are colored ribbons that represent the CTA lines that hold the city together - however fragile the links may be. Heavy interfacing on the panels, but not behind the links, results in an awkward fit and appearance of questionable integrity. However, the model walks with pride, just as Chicagoans hold pride in their neighborhoods and city, regardless of the problems there may be. The book, featuring a black-and-white Chicago flag, is a reference to both the persisting racial violence today, and the history of civil rights movements in the city.
